Welcome to Miami, Essex Central Magazine - May 2016

May 18, 2016

Miami’s South Beach, on the southeastern tip of Florida, is where the international jet set comes to play.
Miami has Latin flavour, European culture and a Caribbean climate to create an oceanfront life all of its own.

From the Art Deco buildings and café culture on Ocean Drive to the shopping on Lincoln Road, there’s an energy that hums from sunrise to sunset and around again.

There’s luxury and elegance everywhere, but strange throwbacks too, such as Wynwood Walls downtown. Nowadays it hosts the prestigious Art Basel event, but it was once the warehouse that housed cocaine for the 1970’s cartels.

The Miami Arts Quarter is buzzing and the city’s ambition is evident in the many art, food and culture projects launching this year. Multicultural Miami should not be missed, and the Cuban district is a lively must-see. Of course you’ll need somewhere to stay, so we are recommending three very special hotels.

SLS SOUTH BEACH
The historic Art Deco hotel offers 140 guest rooms and suites situated in the heart of South Beach on the corner of 17th and Collins Ave. Designed by Philippe Starck, guest rooms offer sleek, luxurious comforts with 24 hour in-room dining by chef, Jose Andres. Starck’s whimsical furniture, wall coverings and designs are highlighted by softly lit ambient tones that create a chic and serene environment accompanied by stunning beach and city views.

HIGHLIGHTS
Katsuya by Starck infuses traditional Japanese cuisine with a provocative twist. Master Sushi Chef Katsuya Uechi, whose acclaimed sushi bars have been recipients of top Zagat ratings for years, unleashes his culinary artistry with a menu of innovative sushi and robata dishes. The restaurant also features the Dragon Lounge, an intimate mezzanine lounge, showcasing award-winning cocktails.

The Bazaar by Jose Andres makes its Miami debut with a vibrant mix of sophisticated cuisine and a playful indoor-outdoor environment. The menu blends Spanish heritage, tradition and ingenuity with influences from local Latin flavors.

THE RALEIGH MIAMI BEACH
Hailed as a “grand dame” by Condé Nast Traveler, The Raleigh Miami Beach is a perfect blend of style and comfort. Prime oceanfront location designed in 1940, it has 105 art deco rooms and What Life Magazine crowned the “Most beautiful pool in America”, all temptingly close to the best shops and nightclubs.

HIGHLIGHTS
The Restaurant at the Raleigh boasts a truly Miami-American menu. The choice of discerning locals and sophisticated visitors, each unique dish has an emphasis on freshness and quality, showcasing the latest fresh, seasonal ingredients from farmers and fisherman near Miami while incorporating global and diverse techniques to the dishes. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, snacks or dinner al fresco in an atmosphere that blends classic iconic style and comfort.

THE REDBURY SOUTH BEACH
A boutique hotel of 69 guest rooms, The Redbury South Beach has a war, bohemian counter-culture feeling. Each room features a record player with a special vinyl collection curated by Capitol Records, spacious closets, work areas, along with luxurious marble bathrooms featuring soaking tubs and rain showers - you’ll want to linger a little longer each morning.
There’s luxury outside too, with a 12,000-square-foot rooftop pool and event space, plus complimentary BMW car service within a 3-mile radius.

HIGHLIGHTS
Named after the Egyptian queen, Cleo features mezzes, shared plates, flatbreads and more. The welcoming atmosphere, designed by famed photographer Matthew Rolston, playfully marries classic Tinseltown style with a relaxed Mediterranean charm.

The splendid cocktails, sumptuous shared plates and warm, inviting setting create an intimate, unforgettable experience for any occasion, which is why it’s one of OpenTable’s 50 Hottest Restaurants in the U.S.

BONUS HOTEL: THE MIAMI BEACH EDITION
Our recent encounter with their sister hotel in London left us very well disposed toward the EDITION brand. The Miami Beach EDITION is only a year old and represents a renovation of the historic Seville Hotel.

There are 294 guest rooms and suites, many with private terraces and direct beachfront view. That includes 28 private bungalows (some with two stories, all with separate private bedroom, dining area, living room and private balcony) and a spectacular rooftop penthouse.

The real charm is the resort’s full-floor entertainment hub, complete with a nightclub, bowling alley, and ice-skating rink - all outfitted with a state-of-the-art sound system, as well as dramatic lighting and projection effects created by world-renowned lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe, a concert lighting specialist for the Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.
