On the road: 24 hours in Sydney


So you’re heading for the sunshine city, where bikinis are acceptable every day of the week and friendly locals have a healthy respect for honouring one's place in a queue. You’re in for a treat.

But you only have 24 hours? No problem, you don’t need to travel far and wide to see the highlights. In fact for dinner, you only need to jump into an elevator.

Here’s our guide for 24 hours in the beautiful city of Sydney.

2pm. Check-in at Establishment Hotel Located in the middle of Sydney’s CBD, the hotel is a short walk away from Sydney Harbour and the Opera House. 4pm. Jump on a ferry to Manly Board the ferry at Sydney Harbour and head to Manly. Enjoy all the delights of the outdoors besides one of Sydney’s famous white sandy beaches, stroll along the boutique shops and treat yourself to an ice cream before grabbing the ferry back into the city.

6pm. Dinner at Mr. Wong The buzz of 1930 jazz-era Shanghai meets a more-is-more take on traditional Chinese. The Cantonese-style menu features over 60 dishes as well as an unrivalled dim sum selection. An extremely popular dinner spot, there is usually a queue as long as the eye can see. Best of all, hotel guests are able to make reservations at Mr Wong (an exclusive VIP perk).

8pm. Salsa at Establishment Bar (Tuesdays only) Classical elegance meets a great party atmosphere at Establishment Bar. Flanked by lines of magnificent iron columns, the centerpiece 42 metre-long marble bar commands the room, with experienced staff ensuring quick bar service. On Tuesday evenings, the tables are cleared away and the bar becomes a centre for an evening of salsa, live percussionists and $12 mojitos.

10pm. Head to Palmer & Co. for a nightcap Tucked down an alley and hidden underground, Palmer & Co. is a time warp to the era of prohibition with its bootleggers, sly-groggers and the like. The 1920s-style clandestine bar serves up an extensive menu of spirits and specially crafted cocktails using the finest seasonal ingredients. Settle in for a night of sensual tipples with raucous yet refined debauchery. Forget the world above, as you slip into the mystery of Palmer & Co. with dapper barmen, dazzling flapper waitresses and live music to set the mood.

8am. Breakfast in the Garden An oasis of sunlight and lush greenery is what you’ll find when you step into Establishment’s breathtaking ‘Garden’. 10am. 12pm. Lunch at Pool Club There has never been an urban oasis quite like ivy’s Pool Club.
