Client blog: Mauritius was made first

“Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius.” Mark Twain’s words of wisdom still ring true. Known for its beaches, lagoons and reefs, the Republic of Mauritius is an Island Nation, situated in the Indian Ocean. It’s a constant hit among our clients and was no exception with Julia and Trevor Spicer. Here’s what they thought...

“Well, what can I say?  Mauritius is beautiful. It was our first trip and I can certainly see us returning.

When we walked into Abbotts Travel, we had no idea where we wanted to go. Sharron, as usual, guided us towards the best places for sun at our chosen time of year. She then advised us on the best resorts when we agreed on Mauritius as our chosen destination.

I believe the mantra is 'West is best', so we booked our stay with Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa.

I was worried about all-inclusive as we hadn’t done this for many years and my memory was of food left out 24/7. I needn’t have worried. Although you can access food throughout the day, the restaurant has certain meal times, meaning all the food was fresh.

There were six restaurants on offer to us. We mostly chose to eat at L’Horizon, the buffet restaurant, as it had plenty of choice. There are stations around the buffet where food is cooked, so you know your meal is less than five minutes old. The head chef was also visible - appearing at most mealtimes to check and taste the food, as well as keep an eye on the servers.

We also ate at La Casa (Italian) which was very good but some dishes carry a supplement.

We really wanted to try Morris Beef, which is Beachcomber’s main restaurant and part of Victoria 2 (adult’s only). This however, proved impossible as the next available booking was one week after we returned home, which was very frustrating.

We certainly didn’t go hungry though and the food, wherever you ate, was absolutely superb.

Sharron had said that Beachcomber were the original tour operators in Mauritius so had the pick of all the best beaches - she wasn't wrong there! Our beach was beautiful, with icing sugar sand. My only complaint was the difficulty walking across it, as your feet sunk in so far!

We walked along our stretch of beach into neighbouring hotels (all beaches are public on Mauritius but apart from a few sellers we were not bothered at all) and could see that some of them had no beach to speak of - or man-made at best. We upgraded our direct flight with British Airways to premium economy, which was a good move as it afforded us a bit of extra comfort. I must say, however, they really need to up their game with regards to in-flight food. We had a wonderful time and we will be in again in the New Year seeking out new places to explore. Thank you again to Sharron - and thanks Abbotts Travel for making all the arrangements." Julia and Trevor Spicer
